Royal George Inn, Lyonshall, Herefordshire, HR5 3JN, UK

Upper Bridge - Affordable Web Design

In 1840 Lyonshall boasted seven pubs: now only The Royal George remains.

Built in 1600 just one storey high it was called The George Inn, until the major naval disaster in 1782 when the flagship The Royal George sank at Spithead with the loss of 900 lives: the pub was then renamed The Royal George Inn.

Additions to extend the pub have been carried out over the years; in the 30's the kitchen was a cider mill, and four acres of orchard behind the pub supplied the fruit for the cider.

The Royal George has been a village pub at the heart of the community.

It is, regrettably, currently shut whilst the owners, Punch Taverns, try to sell the property for as much as they can get. The community is interested in purchasing the pub to provide once again the social hub of the village.

The Royal George is currently shut until further notice. It is badly missed by the community.
